Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred on December 24th, 2021, just before 4:30 PM, in the 500 block of 98th Avenue. A community member called OPD’s Communications Division to report a male adult who had brandished a firearm at an area resident.

Upon arrival, officers in a fully marked patrol vehicle were directed to the man. The armed individual physically assaulted and brandished a firearm at one of the officers. During the incident, an officer discharged his duty firearm at the armed individual. The individual was not struck. No officers were physically injured during this incident.

One suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered.

In accordance with department policy, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Anytime there is an officer-involved shooting in our community, OPD recognizes the incident impacts families, residents of our community, and officers.

Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer-involved shooting is under the investigation of the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Division, and the Oakland Community Police Review Agency (CPRA).

It was a very violent Friday in the City of Oakland, as OPD is also investigating a homicide, multiple shootings, armed robberies, and armed carjackings.

The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency and Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong will hold a news conference on Monday to give further details on all these incidents.
