Tips from the Community Leads to OPD Recovering More Than 100 Pounds of Illegal Fireworks and $38,000

Oakland Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Douglas Avenue around 10:00 AM on June 30, 2021, to investigate reports of an individual selling illegal fireworks. Vital tips from community members led to officers arresting the individual and recovering more than 100 pounds of illegal fireworks and more than $38,000 in cash.

Oakland Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Douglas Avenue around 10:00 AM on June 30, 2021, to investigate reports of an individual selling illegal fireworks. Vital tips from community members led to officers arresting the individual and recovering more than 100 pounds of illegal fireworks and more than $38,000 in cash.

Officers turned the fireworks over to the Oakland Fire Department (OFD) for destruction.

OFD has set up firework collection barrels for residents to surrender unused fireworks at the following locations.

• Station 1: 1603 Martin Luther King Jr. Way

• Station 3: 1445 14th Street

• Station 4: 1235 International Boulevard

• Station 5: 934 34th Street

• Station 18: 5008 Bancroft Avenue

• Station 20: 1401 98th Avenue

If you know someone or see someone in possession, selling, and/or lighting fireworks, please call the Fireworks Tip Line at 510-777-8814.

Those caught with fireworks, even the “Safe & Sane” brand, will be fined up to $1,000. Possession of large quantities of fireworks carries penalties of $5,000 to $10,000 as well as imprisonment.
