All Fire Dispatchers are trained Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD), and may be required to give callers CPR or other emergency medical instructions. Dispatchers answer about 175,000 telephone calls each year. EMDs also dispatch for the Public Works Agency after hours and on weekends.

The Oakland Fire Dispatch Center has achieved its ultimate goal and is now a nationally accredited Center of Excellence.
