OakDOT Appointment Types

Review information below about each appointment type offered by OakDOT

1. Submit Curb, Gutter & Sidewalk [CGS] Permit

  • Description: Submit an application to install or repair sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and/or gutters in the City of Oakland right-of-way. NOTE: Only licensed contractors may apply for this permit.
  • Note: This permit is available for same day (over the counter) issuance.

2. Submit Traffic Control Plan [TCP] Permit

  • Description: Submit an application for a Traffic Control Plan [TCP] in connection with utility work, development projects, and other significant disruptions to pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to perform intake only.

3. Submit Obstruction [OB] Permit

  • Description: Submit an Obstruction [OB] permit application for authorization to block or obstruct any sidewalk, curb/gutter, parking lane, or traffic lane. An approved Traffic Control Plan [TCP] may also be required.
  • Note: For Moving Vans or Storage Pods, this permit is available for same day (over the counter) issuance.

4. Submit Sewer Lateral [SL] & Minor Excavation Permits

  • Description: Submit a Sewer Lateral [SL] Permit application to install a sewer lateral on private property or in the public right-of-way. Only licensed contractors may apply for the SL permit.
  • Note: This permit is available for same day (over the counter) issuance.

5. Submit Sidewalk Certification

  • Description: Apply for Sidewalk Certifications in connection with a property sale/purchase or a property renovation in excess of $100,000 in value. Certification Exemptions and Provisional Certificates are also included here.
  • Note: This permit is available for same day (over the counter) issuance.

6. Submit Utility and Telecom Permits [X, OB, ENMI]

  • Description: Apply for Excavation [X], Obstruction [OB], and Encroachment [ENMI] permits for public utility or telecommunications work in the public right-of-way.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to perform intake only.

7. Submit PX - Offsite Infrastructure Permit

  • Description: Submit an application for a PX permit for the construction of public improvements [e.g., roads, paving, signage, pavement markings, streetlights, and drainage] within the City's right-of-way, a City Easement, or as part of a new Subdivision, Parcel or Tract Map approval.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to perform intake only.

8. Submit Major/Minor Encroachment Permit Application

  • Description: Submit an application for an encroachment into the public right-of-way [ENMI, ENMJ]. After submitting your application, a Plan Check Engineer will be assigned to review your package and they will contact you regarding next steps.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to perform intake only.

9. Existing Application Meeting

  • Description: Schedule an appointment to speak with an OakDOT engineer about an existing permit application. Includes the following permit types: Curb/Gutter/Sidewalk, Private Sewer Lateral, and Obstruction.
  • Note: Permit will not be available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the details of an existing application.


10. Offsite Infrastructure [PX] Permit Meeting (Existing application)

  • Description: Book and appointment with a Plan Check Engineer to discuss an existing PX permit application.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the details of an existing PX permit application.


11. Traffic Control Plan [TCP] Meeting

  • Description: Make an appointment to meet with an OakDOT Traffic Engineer to discuss an existing TCP application.
  • Note: This permit is not available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the details of an existing TCP application.


12. Pre-Application Meeting

  • Description: Schedule an appointment with a OakDOT Staff to discuss policies, procedures, and requirements BEFORE submitting a permit application.
  • Note: Permit will not be available for same day (over the counter) issuance, the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the permit process and requirements before submitting an application.

  • Note: We recommend that you bring a USB flash drive to your computer workstation appointment, in order to upload and/or download any documents or materials, such as a permit application or plans.

When You Arrive & COVID Safety

Please read this notice closely to prepare for your in-person visit

WHEN YOU ARRIVE:

Please do not come to City buildings or facilities if you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive. COVID-19 symptoms include, but are not limited to: chills, cough, fever, loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath, or sore throat.

  • Masks are required for entry into City buildings.
  • When you first enter the building, you will be asked to complete a non-touch temperature screening;
  • Next, check-in with the security guard and sign the visitors log;
  • After signing the log, go to the greeter station;
  • Share your name and appointment information with the greeter, and be prepared to show your appointment confirmation email to the greeter (on your phone or printed copy)
  • After confirming your appointment, the greeter will direct you to wait in the waiting area on the first floor, please remain in this area until an OakDOT staff member meets you.
  • OakDOT staff will meet you on the first floor, then escort you to the second floor for your counter appointment.

PLEASE NOTE: All in-person appointments with OakDOT are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. If you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, it will be cancelled automatically, and you will need to visit the scheduling website to book a new appointment for the next available business day.
