Fire Code Inspections

Fire inspectors conduct field inspections in accordance with fire safety regulations found in the California Fire Code (Fire Code), the California Health and Safety Code and the local amendments to the Fire Code, as provided in Chapter 15.12 of the Oakland Municipal Code.

In alignment with our Planning and Building Department partners, the below listed conditions will be in effect immediately regarding inspection requests moving forward:

Announcement - Fire Code Inspections response to COVID 19 Emergency – (as of April 1st, 2020)

Due to the revised and more stringent Public Health Shelter in Place Order issued on March 31st, 2020 and effective on April 1st at 12:00AM from the Alameda County Public Health Officer. The City of Oakland, Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau, Fire Code Inspection Services will only be conducting inspections as follows:

1. Projects immediately necessary to the maintenance, operation, or repair of Essential Infrastructure.

2. Projects associated with Healthcare Operations, including creating or expanding Healthcare Operations, provided that such construction is directly related to the COVID19 response.

3. Affordable housing that is or will be income‐restricted, including multi‐unit or mixed‐use developments containing at least 10% incomerestricted units.

4. Public works projects if specifically designated as an Essential Governmental Function by the lead governmental agency.

5. Shelters and temporary housing, but not including hotels or motels.

6. Projects immediately necessary to provide critical noncommercial services to individuals experiencing homelessness, elderly persons, persons who are economically disadvantaged, and persons with special needs.

7. Construction necessary to ensure that existing construction sites that must be shut down under this order are left in a safe and secure manner, but only to the extent necessary to do so.

8. Construction or repair necessary to ensure that residences and buildings containing Essential Businesses are safe, sanitary, or habitable to the extent such construction or repair cannot reasonably be delayed.

NOTICE - All other inspection types not listed above will not be conducted.

Inspections already scheduled that do not meet the above orders will be screened by Fire

Prevention Bureau Supervisors and Managers during morning calls and emails and will determine if the inspection will be conducted or

cancelled based on the public health orders stated above.
