ADA Accommodation Information for OPRYD Programs

ADA INCLUSION STATEMENT: The City of Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development (OPRYD) Department is fully committed to compliance with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Please make accommodation requests at least 10 days prior to an event. Direct all inquiries concerning program and disability accommodation to the OPRYD Recreation Program Director of Inclusive Services, Bianca Posada, at 510.597.5064,, or call 711 for California Relay Service.

All participants have a right to enroll in the OPRYD program of their choice, so long as they meet the age and registration requirements of the program. If a participant has a disability or medical condition that may interfere with participation in the program, we can provide reasonable accommodations that help alleviate the barriers.

Inclusion Intake Process:

1. Register for desired OPRYD program.

2. Reach out to Recreation Program Director of Inclusive Services, Bianca Posada (Contact info above).

3. Ms. Bianca will provide you with an Intake form. This form will focus on the needs, skills, and goals of your child in regards to recreation.

4. Complete form, and turn in.

5. Ms. Bianca will overlook form, and set up a family interview to discuss desired accommodations.

6. Ms. Bianca and family will meet with program coordinators to discuss Inclusion Plan, and ensure the staff are aware of accommodations in place.

7. Child will join in the program.

8. Staff will complete documentation forms to track progress of the accommodation, to help determine if changes need to be made.

9. After completion of program, family will complete a survey to determine if they felt the accommodation was successful or not.

We do not charge extra for accommodations, however if a 1:1 aide is required, we ask that families connect with Regional Center of the East Bay or other local resources that help with funding extra staff. Extra OPRYD aides can assist with transitions, relaying directions, helping with focusing on projects, and modeling desired behaviors. Aides from outside organizations (United Cerebral Palsy, Regional Center of the East Bay, etc.) are also welcome.

Our staff do not offer Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), but an ABA therapist from an outside organization may accompany your child.

*If your child consistently exhibits behaviors that are harmful to themselves or other participants, and may require restraints, we may ask that they seek a more structured setting.

The Inclusion Center provides an environment where people have an opportunity to shine regardless of their ability or disability. Our goal is to create an atmosphere of acceptance so that individuals with special needs acquire the confidence and skills to exercise their option to access mainstream programs and services. A component of our service is to include and educate people without disabilities so they may gain the benefit of knowing how to interact with their peers regardless of functioning level.
