On Shake Out Day, millions of people all around the globe participate in earthquake safety drills at work, school, and at home. We encourage everyone (Students and School Staff) to participate with us onsite, or wherever they are.

What: 2022 Great Oakland Shake Out Drill [educational activities will include the following]:

  • Oakland Emergency/Hazard Awareness & Education
  • Small Live Fire Suppression Skills Training & Development
  • Emergency Medical Skills Training & Development
  • Earthquake Simulation/Shake Simulator

When: Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 10:20am

  • Event opens at 9am and ends at 11:30am
  • Drill starts at 10:20am and ends at 10:25am

Oakland's Emergency Management Team

Each year the City of Oakland honors the anniversary of the infamous Loma Prieta Earthquake. In the minutes immediately following the 15-second quake, the City of Oakland experienced extreme devastation, including the tragic deaths of 42 people, many physical injuries, and severe damage to the City infrastructure.​

This history is why we stay vigilant and stay ready. The painful memory of this incident is also what drives us to practice and exercise our skills on International ShakeOut Day!
