A person is severely injured or killed in a traffic crash two times a week on Oakland’s streets. The City of Oakland Department of Transportation is working to prevent crashes, save lives and improve mobility for everyone who travels on Oakland's streets and sidewalks.

Transportation + Land Use

The first section of Oakland's 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP) is Transportation + Land Use (TLU). Transportation accounts for two thirds of Oakland’s local greenhouse gas emissions. The TLU Actions were developed with a vision that integrated land use and access to safe, reliable, low-cost, high-quality mobility options for every Oaklander will enable an equitable transition away from cars.

Tree Services

The City of Oakland will only prune trees in hazardous or emergency situations. In 2008, nearly half of the Tree Services unit was eliminated due to lack of funding. The tree planting, watering, pruning and pollarding services were all eliminated.

Truck Management Plan

The West Oakland Truck Management Plan (TMP) is an action-based plan designed to reduce the effects of transport trucks on local streets in West Oakland. The TMP was approved by the City and the Port in April 2019. When the TMP is implemented, the West Oakland community should experience fewer trucks driving or parking where they should not be, improved safety for people walking, biking, and driving in West Oakland, and an overall improvement in the quality of life for people living and working in West Oakland.

Truck Management Plan Progress

Implementation of the Truck Management Plan (TMP) started in July 2019. Below is a summary of OakDOT's work on the TMP Strategies.

Truck Parking Reporting: Benchmark Year 2017

The truck parking regulations were updated in April 2022. Evaluating truck parking ticket data is one way to gauge effectiveness of truck parking regulations. As fewer trucks park illegally, fewer tickets will be issued.

Oaklanders are being randomly selected to receive funding for transit, shared mobility, and other mobility-related services through prepaid debit cards and Clipper Cards. Stay tuned for project updates!

Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens

Urban farming, the small-scale cultivation of crops, has become increasingly popular throughout Oakland and the United States. To help support this vital movement and encourage local food production, the City of Oakland recently updated its zoning regulations related to urban agriculture.
