Services for Developers and Contractors

The City of Oakland is committed to supporting affordable housing for its residents. Since 1988, we have funded the development of over 6000 units of housing. The City has many funding programs that work with non-profit developers to increase the number of affordable housing units and repair existing housing units.

Homeownership programs are designed to expand opportunities for prospective Oakland homebuyers through education, financial assistance, and resource referral.

The City of Oakland offers many loan and grant programs to assist homeowners and developers.

Sheffield Village Recreation Center

Located in East Oakland near San Leandro, Sheffield Village features a softball field, basketball court, tot play area, and football/soccer field. The center provides programs for all community members from toddlers to seniors. Rental permits for the facility and grounds available.

Shop Oakland

Help sustain and grow Oakland's economy by shopping locally. Now, more than ever, it's important to support local businesses that capture the spirit and reflect the diversity of our community. By supporting them, you're also supporting our neighbors who are employed by small businesses.

Short Term Encroachment Permit Information

If your event does not qualify as a special event but would like to close a street to vehicular traffic (e.g. for a block party) you will need to apply for a short term encroachment permit.

Sidewalks

Sidewalks are where Oaklanders get exercise, walk to daily needs, wait for the bus, and talk with neighbors. They are one of the most important pieces of Oakland’s transportation network, and it’s essential that they’re kept well-maintained and accessible for everyone.

Skilled Local Talent

Oakland has one of the most skilled workforces in the U.S. Since 2010, the number of working Oaklanders has grown almost 20% from 170,000 to 215,300.

Social Media Policy Ad Hoc

The objective of this Ad Hoc is to review the protocols and policies related to the Department’s use of social media platforms and personal messaging, on- and off-duty. This Ad Hoc will propose a new social media policy for implementation by the Oakland Police Department.

Special Events

As of February 2023, the Economic and Workforce Development Department processes special event permits on behalf of the City of Oakland.
