Oakland, CA — Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf today announced the pending departure of her chief of staff, Tomiquia Moss, who has accepted the position of Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hamilton Families, a non-profit organization that works to prevent and end family homelessness in the Bay Area. Mayor Schaaf has named longtime aide Shereda Nosakhare to succeed Ms. Moss when she departs on January, 13, elevating her from her position as Deputy Chief of Staff, a post which she has held for two years.

“Tomiquia is a fighter who cares deeply about Oaklanders and never forgot that she worked for them every day,” said Mayor Schaaf. “Today she’s devoting herself to a difficult problem for communities throughout the Bay Area and that all Oaklanders are invested in. I wish Tomiquia all the best as we send Hamilton Families the best fighter they could have in their corner.”

“I began my career as a community organizer and have worked for most of my life in roles that have allowed me to serve our most vulnerable populations both in terms of policy and direct service,” said Ms. Moss. “My new role at Hamilton Families will allow me to do that once again. This issue is top of mind in cities like ours and across this country. I look forward to continued partnership on this work with Mayor Schaaf and the City of Oakland.”

The Chief of Staff serves as principal advisor and manager of the mayor’s office, and acts as primary liaison with offices and agencies both inside and outside of the government.

Ms. Nosakhare has worked closely with Mayor Schaaf since joining her staff in 2011, when Mayor Schaaf was a councilmember. She brings more than a decade of hands-on political experience at the city, county, state and federal levels, and also in the private sector. Raised in Oakland, Ms. Nosakhare and her family live in District 7.

“Shereda understands how the city works and how we can make our government work better for Oaklanders,” said Mayor Schaaf. “I couldn’t ask for a more capable ally as we build on the progress of the last two years.”

“I am honored to serve Mayor Schaaf and all Oaklanders in this new role,” said Ms. Nosakhare. “I am committed to the Mayor’s vision of safer, stronger and more equitable city, and to providing Oaklanders an effective government that is committed to the issues that matter most to them.”
