One Person is in Custody After Stealing an OPD Cruiser

The Oakland Police Department is investigating an auto theft. On September 1, 2022, just before 1:30 AM, an OPD officer was responding to a medical emergency in the 1200 block of Broadway. As the officer was helping the person with the medical emergency, another individual approached the officer to report a stolen vehicle.

As the officer tried to balance helping the two individuals in need, a third person forced their way into the officer’s fully marked locked OPD vehicle.

The individual then headed southbound on Broadway in the stolen OPD vehicle. At that same time, an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Deputy was in the area. The Deputy witnessed the incident and attempted to stop the driver of the stolen OPD vehicle.

The ACSO deputy pursued the stolen vehicle across town. The pursuit ended in the 4200 block of Oakmore Road when the stolen vehicle collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle and a brick wall. As the individual exited the vehicle ACSO deputies took the individual into custody.

No injuries were reported.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about this case can contact OPD’s Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 238-3426.
