About

We are seeking responsible, motivated and intellectually curious individuals who have an interest in political science, public policy, community engagement or related fields, and who are reflective of the diversity of Oakland. The internship will be hybrid, so it will be partly in person and partly remote/virtual.

In addition, our interns:

-- Must submit proof of Covid-19 Vaccination.

-- Must be enrolled at one of Oakland’s high schools, or in a Career Technical Education, community college or 4-year education program.

-- Must be able to commit to interning for 3 months: 1/3/22 to 4/3/22.

-- Must be able to commit to working a minimum of 10 hours per week (Monday-Friday), though we have a preference for interns who can commit to 15-20 hours per week. Each intern shift must be for at least 3 hours per day.

-- Must be able to attend a weekly 1 hour intern huddle (zoom session) for the duration of the internship. The intern huddles are usually on Wednesday's from 3pm-4pm, however, this could be subject to change to accommodate the schedules of the intern cohort.

-- Will have the opportunity to work closely with the Mayor’s staff and/or other city departments on special projects of their mutual choosing in the areas of Art & Culture Preservation, Community Engagement, Economic & Workforce Development, Education, Housing, Intergovernmental Affairs, Media/Communications, Public Safety, and Transportation & Infrastructure.

-- Will lend support with administrative tasks including data entry, constituent casework, and preparing policy or event briefings for the Mayor and staff.

-- Will participate in community engagement events, two of which may occur on the weekend, and some of which may occur on evenings.

-- Will join some staff meetings and will have the opportunity to meet Mayor Libby Schaaf.

-- Will receive professional development and networking opportunities through recommendations and informational interviews.

-- Will give daily reports regarding their progress on ongoing assignments at the beginning and end of every shift to two supervisors.

Other Important Details:

Please note we make decisions on a rolling basis, so please do not wait until the week of the final deadline to apply! We will review your application in full whenever you submit, but we cannot guarantee our cohort will not fill up before the final deadline.

**THE FINAL APPLICATION DEADLINE IS 11:59pm, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31ST

-- We are trying to fundraise for our internship program, as of now however, interns are unpaid (We can accommodate part time work schedules as long as there is advance and clear communication to avoid schedule conflicts).

-- Upon completion of the internship program, we do offer informational interviews with professionals in your field of interest to help boost your network.

-- Our hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30AM – 5:00PM (some evenings and weekends may be required).

If it is determined that the Mayor’s Office has reached capacity for interns in any cohort, select candidates may be selected for consideration in the next internship cohort.
