Happy Summer!

Summer is upon us, so we are excited to get out of the house and safely socialize at our favorite park or open space. Warm weather and heat makes outdoor activities enjoyable but it also means we need to take care to hydrate and stay cool.

Whether you are lounging in the West Oakland Senior Center Courtyard, dancing on the Downtown Oakland deck, hanging out in the North Oakland Garden, or barbequing on the East Oakland patio it is important to be mindful before the heat catches up to you.

The Aging Services Staff put together this handy guide to help you stay cool. We also thought you would like a guide about when to expect cool or fresh air centers to open. (Click the link below)

We hope all our members and their families will have a great summer with our Tips to Cool.

About

The Mission-style City landmark was built in 1923 by architect Charles W. Dickey, who also designed the Claremont Hotel, the Temescal and Golden Gate Libraries and Kahn's Department Store. It was designated in the eclectic spirit of the time blending a functional approach to a modern classroom building with the historical model of the California missions. In 1923, it was an outstanding educational facility including science and home economics labs and amenities such as study courts and above average concern for light and quiet.

In 1998, North Oakland Senior Center opened in the Auditorium of the University High School, a historic preservation project with 15,000 square feet of space creatively for senior and community programs. The entire site is 8.9 acres. The theater chairs in the hallway were originally inside the Auditorium, the scene of many UNI High School productions!
