About

Safety improvements

The City of Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) leveraged paving projects in 2016 and 2021 to provide temporary improvements between 20th Street and 52nd Street. OakDOT has also secured grant funding from two sources to make these improvements permanent between 20th Street and 42nd Street.

1) KONO (20th Street to 29th Street) : OakDOT installed the temporary protected bike lane in 2016. Since 2016, OakDOT has made incremental improvements to reinforce the separation between parked cars and people biking, address curbside needs for businesses, and improve safety. Meanwhile, OakDOT applied for and was awarded a grant to make these improvements permanent, by replacing the painted bike lane separation, plastic bus boarding islands, and painted pedestrian safety islands with concrete. 2) Pill Hill / Mosswood (29th Street to MacArthur Boulevard) : OakDOT applied for and was awarded a grant to install painted bike lanes and pedestrian crossing improvements. This project is currently in design with construction anticipated in 2021-2022. For more information, visit: https://www.oaklandca.gov/projects/telegraph-avenue-complete-streets-redesign

3) Temescal (MacArthur Boulevard to 52nd Street): OakDOT installed temporary protected bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings when the street was repaved in 2020 and installed concrete bus boarding islands in 2021.
