Youth Boating and Sailing Camps

The City of Oakland's Lake Merritt Boating Center offers summer boating camps for youth ages 7 to 17 on Lake Merritt and on the Oakland Estuary. Campers advance in skills as they progress through the camps and grow older. Teens have an opportunity to train to be Junior Leaders for the summer camps. Registration, extended care, refund and transfer policy, locations, and scholarship information is at the bottom of this page.

General Camp Information

Locations
Lake Merritt Boating Center Summer Camps are held at 568 Bellevue Avenue, Oakland, CA 94610. Camps held Monday through Friday Lake Merritt Camps are from 9:00 am ~ 3:30 pm.

Fee Waiver/Scholarship
A limited number of scholarships and fee waivers are available for Oakland residents based on financial need. Please contact the Lake Merritt Boating Center at (510) 238-2196 or email ggipson@oaklandca.gov for an application or to verify that you qualify.

Refund & Transfer Policy
Refund amounts are set by the City Council in the City of Oakland Master Fee Schedule. Transfers only permitted if there is space in the new class.

Standard Course Withdrawal/Transfer Fees:

  • 25% of course fee if 31 or more days in advance
  • 50% of course fee if 11-30 days in advance
  • 100% of course fee if 10 or fewer days in advance.

Swim Evaluation

Before classes begin, all students are required to complete a swim evaluation offered at Oakland public pools or any pool of your choice with a certified lifeguard.
